The Federal Research Center Pushchino Scientific Center for Biological Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences (PSCBR RAS) is a unique scientific institution of global importance. It makes up about a quarter of the entire potential of Russian biological research in the field of molecular and cell biology, biotechnology, biochemistry of microorganisms, genetic technologies, gene and cellular engineering, photobiology, biophysics, soil science and ecology.
The PSCBR employs more than 1,300 people, of whom about 600 are research workers: 140 have a doctorate degree (D.Sci.) and more than 300 are candidates of sciences (Ph.D.), 2 members of RAS (academicians) and 6 corresponding members of RAS. The scientists carry out world-class fundamental and applied research at 70 scientific laboratories, 15 scientific auxiliary and 11 production units.
PSCBR includes also a Center of the Shared Use (CSU) established in 2019 on the basis of the five Institutes that compose PSCBR. The СSU provides the infrastructural support for scientific programs and projects in fundamental and applied research and supports also high-tech sectors of the economy through the creation of knowledge-intensive innovative technologies. The CSU hosts the All-Russian Collection of Microorganisms, recognized as the International Depository and the largest in Russia non-medical microbiological collection, and the Algological Collection aimed at the preservation and maintenance of strains of cyanobacteria and algae. The CSU supports also the Experimental Gene Cryobank" of plant and animal genes which carries out the vitrification and Cryopreservation of biological objects.
