History

A large-scale project aimed at the concentration of scientific research in specialized academic centers was initiated in this country in the early 50s of the last century. One of such entities, Pushchino Scientific Center was formed by the Order of the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences of May 10, 1956 with the idea of developing up-to-date biological research. (The town takes its name from the village of Pushchino, which was first mentioned in the 1579 records of Ivan IV, the Terrible, as being a fiefdom of the famous Pushchin family),

Until recently, Pushchino Scientific Center provided organizational and methodological support for the research activities of nine biological institutes and the Radio Astronomy Observatory of the P.N. Lebedev Physical Institute.

The new concept for the development of fundamental science in Russia is based on the consolidation of research institutes of the Academy of Sciences by merging into Federal Research Centers. According to this concept, the Federal Research Center "Pushchino Scientific Center for Biological Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences" (PSCBR RAS) was established in 2018, which significantly expanded the capabilities of Pushchino scientists to initiate large research projects through the concentration of scientific potential and the integration of research.

Today PSCBR RAS hosts five key academia institutes and represents a major component of Russian Federation’s endeavors in the field of physical, chemical, and bio-molecular biology. It is among the top-ranking academic centers in Russia that has made tremendous contribution to the understanding of processes in molecular and cell biology, bio-organic chemistry, microbiology, plant and soil biology.
