Scientific service

Scientific Service is provided by the Center of the Shared Use (CSU) established on the basis of the five Institutes that compose the Federal Research Center "Pushchino Scientific Center for Biological Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences" (PSCBR RAS).

The СSU provides the infrastructural support for scientific programs and projects in fundamental and applied research it also provides support for high-tech sectors of the economy through the creation of knowledge-intensive innovative technologies. CSU provides technical support of educational programs for training highly qualified personnel, postgraduate students, bachelors, masters.

The CSU consists of the following subdivisions:

  • The All-Russian Collection of Microorganisms
  • Algological Collection (since 2024 a part of the All-Russian Collection of Microorganisms)
  • Sector of Optical Microscopy and Spectrophotometry
  • Sector of Physical and Chemical Methods for Studying Soils and Ecosystems
  • Electron Microscopy Sector
  • Sector of Sources of Ionizing Radiation
  • Experimental genetic cryobank
  • Pilot Process Plant

Bioremediation Technology

One of the promising areas of environmental technologies is bioremediation. read more

Algological Collection

The Algological Collection (ACSSI) was established in 2016 with the aim at preservation and maintenance of strains of cyanobacteria and algae that are new to science or flora, rare and complex from a taxonomic point of view, isolated primarily from terrestrial ecosystems of Russia and other countries. ACSSI is registered with the World Federation for Culture Collections (WFCC) under number 1132.

Services provided:

  • Deposition and storage of the strain under conditions of open access and inclusion in the ACSSI Catalog
  • Strain identification based on morphological analysis
  • Strain identification based on sequencing of a single molecular marker (16S rRNA, 18S rRNA, ITS2, rbcL, tufA, etc. depending on the object)
  • Isolation of strains of cyanabacteria and/or algae from a mixed culture received from the customer
  • Isolation of microbial strains from a natural sample
  • Providing a live strain subculture
  • Providing the depositor with a live subculture of the strain
  • Consultations to specialists
  • Conducting individual internships on such issues as the isolation, cultivation and taxonomic determination of cyanabacteria and algae

In 2024, the ACSSI became part of the All-Russian Collection of Microorganisms (VCM) of the G.K. Scriabin Institute of Biochemistry and Physiology of Microorganisms The ACSSI fund will soon be published on the website https://www.vkm.ru/ under the acronym VKM-Al..

Sector of Optical Microscopy and Spectrophotometry

Main research targets:

  • Determination of the level of secretion and membrane expression of heat shock proteins (HSP 90) in tumor cells using immunocytochemistry methods in application to the tasks of studying the participation of stress proteins in the regulation of invasion and migration of malignant cells and the search for new antimetastatic drugs.
  • Testing the functional activity of regulatory regions of prokaryotic genes as part of reporter vector constructs containing the genes of the fluorescent proteins EGFP mCherry, determining the relative effectiveness of counter-directional bacterial promoters, including those controlling the synthesis of non-coding RNAs.
  • Determination of the level of expression of membrane proteins of microorganisms in translational fusion constructs with fluorescent protein genes.
  • Study of the protective effects of modified antioxidant enzymes and decongestant peptides in ischemia-reperfusion injuries of internal organs.
  • Study of the effectiveness of radioprotectors under the influence of ionizing radiation in sub-lethal and lethal doses.
  • Study of the nerve and muscle tissue of flatworms.
  • Cellular mechanisms of neuroglial interactions in the brain.
  • Molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration due to impaired expression of transcription factors in the cerebral cortex.
  • Molecular mechanisms of damage to brain cells during ischemia and the development of protection means.
  • Development of methods for selective protection of certain populations of GABAergic neurons that control the neuronal network from hyperexcitation during epileptiform activity.
  • Methods of immunocytochemistry and immunohistochemistry - registration of antibody fluorescence.
  • Vital calcium neuroimaging, registration of ROS production in mitochondria and cytosol.
  • Development of cellular models - biosensors, convenient for spectral studies, which can find application in pharmacology, medicine and ecology.

Services provided:

  • Preparation of surviving sections (slices) of tissue.
  • Immunocyto- and immunohistochemical staining of preparations.
  • Immunofluorescent registration of the level of secretion and membrane expression of proteins of eukaryotes and microorganisms.

Sector of Physical and Chemical Methods for Studying Soils and Ecosystems

The main task of this Sector is the timely and high-quality analytical work to characterize the physical and chemical properties of soils, plants, natural waters and other objects of the biosphere. Along with traditional methods of qualitative and quantitative chemical analysis, the following instruments are successfully used: flame and atomic emission spectrophotometry, gas chromatography, X-ray structural and X-ray fluorescence analysis, optical and electron microscopy.

Pilot Process Plant

The Pilot Process Plant (a scientific support unit) was established in 1993 on the basis of the Experimental Technological Installation that had operated since 1975 at G.K. Scriabin Institute of Biochemistry and Physiology of Microorganisms. This Pilot Process Plant (PPP) was registered as a Unique scientific installation by the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia (UNU) http://www.ckp-rf.ru/usu/279918/.

At present, the PPP is a unique basis for the development of a wide range of biotechnologies for the industrial production of drugs based on microbiological synthesis. It includes three main sectors: fermentation, preliminary purification of drugs, and final chemical purification.

Research interest:

  • Scaling up of laboratory developments
  • Development of promising and profitable technologies for the production of microbial synthesis products - enzymes, proteins, physiologically active peptides and secondary metabolites.
  • Development of environmentally friendly technological regulations
  • Development of bacterial and enzyme preparations to improve the quality and intensify technological processes of food production.
  • Development of bacterial preparations for microbiological degradation of foreign compounds, cleaning the environment from oil and petroleum products.
  • Development of biosynthesis processes for biologically active compounds for agricultural needs.
